An infant, who has been identified as Iokepa Liptak, was pronounced dead at an area hospital early this morning after being mauled by a family dog shortly after midnight at a Wai'anae home.

The baby was 2-months-old and was attacked by the family dog, said Major Frank Fujii of the Honolulu Police Department.

The Hawaiian Humane Society took the dog away at 4:30 a.m. and is holding the black mixed-breed dog in isolation, said Kawehi Yim, Hawaiian Humane Society spokeswoman.

The baby's mother was also bitten and taken to the hospital, Fujii said.

Cheplic said she was in stable condition and that an ambulance crew was called back to the home less than hour later to treat another adult who was not taken to the hospital but was injured in the attack.

Police are classifying the case as an unattended death, Fujii said. An autopsy will be scheduled tomorrow.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight .
