$1.7M released for Hawaii rockfall mitigation

Advertiser Staff

More than $1.7 million to reduce the danger of rockfalls and restore streams on Maui, Kaua'i and O'ahu has been released by Gov. Linda Lingle.

"These projects will make necessary improvements and reduce the risk of incidents across the state," Lingle said in a statement.

The projects include:

  • Lanikai Rockfall Mitigation: $965,000 to remove boulder and rock outcroppings on a state-owned parcel near private residences.

Design is scheduled to begin in November and construction is scheduled to begin in July 2009 and be completed in October 2009.

  • Makaua Stream (O'ahu) and Wailapa Stream/Kilauea River (Kaua'i) Restoration: $700,000 in state funds to supplement federal funds for stream restoration work.

Both sites experienced stream-bank erosion and reduced stream capacity during the March 2006 floods.

Construction for the Makaua Stream project is scheduled to begin in November and be completed in June 2009. Construction for the Wailapa Stream/Kilauea River project is scheduled to begin in summer 2009 and be completed in early 2010.

  • Pauoa Rockfall Mitigation (O'ahu): $75,000 to prevent loose rocks and boulders on state-owned land from falling onto homes and other private property below. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2009 and be completed in July 2009.

  • Koki Beach Rockfall Mitigation (Maui): $30,000 to investigate and recommend measures to address potential rockfall and landslide hazards on state-owned land adjacent private property.

Design is scheduled to begin in December and be completed in March 2009.
