Prosecutors yesterday accused a Makiki man of stealing more than $30,000 worth of new and old photography items from a camera shop.
Clay Renaldo Lewis Jr., 38, was charged with second-degree burglary and first-degree theft. His bail is $75,000 pending an initial appearance Friday in District Court.
Lewis, who has 31 criminal convictions, was arrested Tuesday at 1:10 a.m. at 1544 Ke'eaumoku St. after fleeing from police.
An off-duty police officer driving home reported seeing a man wearing a hooded shirt and carrying a large bag in the parking lot of a camera store that was closed at 12:42 a.m. The off-duty officer provided information to responding officers, who attempted a traffic stop on the suspect. The suspect, however, drove off, but not out of the sight of officers.
The suspect vehicle was found in an apartment parking lot, but as officers approached, a man fled from the van. Police said they found the suspect hiding between buildings. Stolen items were seized from the suspect's van, police said.
