A couple of calls didn't go Kalaheo's way yesterday against Konawaena.

But the Mustangs battled hard in the final inning to make sure the victory went their way.

Alika Ka'anapu drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs to cap a five-run bottom of the seventh inning as Kalaheo beat Konawaena, 9-8, in the first round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball Division II State Championships at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

"They kept fighting all the way," said Kalaheo coach Timothy Lierman. "We kept getting guys on. We had some hard luck, a couple of double plays. And then we were able to get a couple guys on base; walks, hit batters and what not, and some big two-strike base hits, for sure."

Kalaheo, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's No. 4 team, plays No. 3 seed and OIA champion Waipahu in the quarterfinals today at 3:30 p.m.

Ka'anapu led off the seventh with a ground out, but the next seven Mustangs reached. Ka'anapu walked on four pitches to end the game.

"I just stayed patient and everything," Ka'anapu said. "The (previous) at-bat, I swung at the first pitch and grounded out. I let him throw a strike to me and he didn't."

Kalaheo (11-3) had three hits, three walks and two hit batsmen in the inning. There were also two wild pitches.

The Mustangs were on the short end of two calls earlier in the game.

In the fourth, Kalaheo's Richard Preza Haynes lined a ball that appeared to be trapped by the second baseman. The umpire ruled it a catch, and the second baseman threw to second for an inning-ending double play.

In the Konawaena seventh, Kawika Karratti lined a pitch into left for extra bases. He tried to stretch it into a triple, and appeared to be tagged out well before the runner from first crossed home plate. The umpires counted the run to put Konawaena (7-8), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation runner-up, ahead 8-4.

"No comment on that," Lierman said.

MOLOKA'I 9, RADFORD 6

Moloka'i's Scott Rapanot seemed to be involved in a little bit of everything yesterday in a victory over Radford.

He committed a crucial error at second base in the fifth, which allowed the Rams back in the game, and blew a save opportunity after allowing an unearned run in the seventh.

Rapanot also drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth and got the victory by striking out eight batters over the final three innings.

In the eighth, Rapanot stepped to the plate with runners at first and second and two outs. He lined a 1-1 pitch into left, which scored Kamoana Puaa-Spencer, and Kaden Tabil came all the way around after the ball got past the left fielder. Nelson Rapanot singled in Scott Rapanot later in the inning to make it 9-6.

"He hits the ball," said Moloka'i coach Michael Kamakana. "That's why he's my No. 2 batter."

Moloka'i, the Maui Interscholastic League runner-up, plays No. 4 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Honoka'a in the quarterfinals today at 1 p.m.

In the bottom of the eighth, Scott Rapanot retired the first batter on a ground out and struck out the final two batters.

"I was feeling good because I had my defense to back me up. I was feeling confident," he said.

Moloka'i (7-7) led 6-0 after 3 1/2 innings, but Radford, the OIA runner-up, tied it at 6-all in the seventh on Brad Osborne's RBI single.

In the fifth, Radford had the bases loaded and two outs with Osborne at the plate. He lined a ball at Scott Rapanot, the second baseman, but it went off his glove and to the wall. Three runs scored on the play, which brought Radford (8-5-1) to 6-4.

"The thing tailed back to the foul line, so I misjudged it," Scott Rapanot said.
