Vog could cause problems again this weekend

Advertiser Staff

If the trade winds diminish to the point that is expected this weekend, air quality could become an issue once again, the National Weather Service said in its forecast this morning.

Volcanic haze in the vicinity of Kilauea volcano could be of particular concern, according to the forecast.

If the trade winds stall out completely, "sea and land breezes could potentially transport volcanic emissions into the more populated areas as early as this weekend and into the first couple of days of the following week," forecasters said.

As of 10:45 this morning, sulfide dioxide levels were deemed to be at the "good" level north of Halema'uma'u Crater and Pu'u O'o, where eruptions have been occurring.

"Moderate" levels of sulfur dioxide are being detected in areas southeast of those two locations, according to a Web site maintained by the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park staff.
