NFL: S Landry returns to Redskins offseason practices

Associated Press

ASHBURN, Va. — Safety LaRon Landry rejoined the Washington Redskins for offseason practices today, following his unexcused absence the day before.

"I was at home taking care of a lot of family issues," the second-year safety said. "But I came back and I am ready to work."

Landry and veteran cornerback Shawn Springs were the only non-injured players absent when the team reassembled this week for two weeks of practices, the last sessions before training camp begins next month.

Springs' absence isn't surprising, given that he prefers to work out on his own during the offseason. Still, it doesn't sit well with first-year coach Jim Zorn.

"We are still wondering where Shawn Springs is," Zorn said.

Defensive end Phillip Daniels was disappointed that his teammate was a no-show for the practices, which are considered voluntary under NFL guidelines.

"There is nothing voluntary about them," Daniels said. "Be here. In all my years I have made every one of them, so there is no excuse not to make it. We are putting in a lot of new material, and you have to stay up with it."
