Foodland Super Market Ltd. is close to finishing an eight-month renovation of its store at Market City Shopping Center.

The project is one of several store remodelings for the local grocery store chain in recent years, but the upgrade to the Market City Foodland, which in 1948 became the first Foodland in the state, coincides with the company's 60th anniversary this year.

"We are excited to celebrate the 60th anniversary of our company by reopening Foodland Market City with a brand new look and offerings," Jenai S. Wall, Foodland chairwoman and CEO, said in a press statement.

Changes to the 28,000-square-foot store include made-to-order salad and sandwich bars, a sushi chef station and expanded selections of specialty, gourmet, natural and organic products.

Also, the front of the store will feature a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf shop, a franchise operated in Hawai'i by the parent company of Foodland. The coffee shop, however, isn't scheduled to open until Aug. 30.

Foodland celebrates a "reopening" of the store today. The 24-hour store did not close, but has undergone interior and exterior work in phases since November.
