Kane'ohe team wins volleyball title

OVA VB Rags of Kane'ohe defeated Pilipa'a 17s of Hilo, 25-21, 26-24, yesterday in the gold-medal Club Division match of the USA Junior Olympic Boys' Volleyball Championships in Sandy, Utah.

OVA VB Rags defeated Riptides OC 17 Blue (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), 32-30, 25-16, in the quarterfinals and fsvbc 17L (Davie, Fla.), 25-21, 25-21, in the semifinals. Pilipa'a 17s beat Cal Air Volleyball (Calgary, Canada), 25-20, 25-19, in the quarterfinals and Cincinnati Attack (Cincinnati, Ohio), 25-20, 15-25, 15-10, in the semifinals.

Spencer Bishop of OVA VB Rags was named MVP of the Club Division. Also named to the all-tournament team were: Reid Pangelinan, Anthony Robinson and Chase Suzumoto of OVA VB Rags, and Shelton Kalilikane, Clayton Morante and Robert Woolsey Jr. of Pilipa'a 17s.

Pali 17 Kaepa (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) defeated Balboa 17 Quiksilver (Costa Mesa, Calif.), 16-25, 25-23, 19-17, in the gold-medal match of the Open Division. Hawai'i's Outrigger 17 advanced to the gold-medal round but its results were not available. Madison McKibbin of Outrigger 17 was named to the all-tournament team in the Open Division.


GOLF

FINK, MERKLE PREVAIL

David Fink and Kristina Merkle captured the 15-18 age divisions of the 10th annual King Auto Group State Junior Championship Tuesday at The Club at Hokulia on the Big Island.

Fink shot 70-69—139 on the par-72, 6,881-yard layout to beat Lorens Chan by two strokes. Justin Keiley was third at 145.

Merkle shot 73-71—144 on the par-72, 6,123-yard layout to beat Elise Okada by five strokes. Cyd Okino was third at 156.

Fink and Merkle were awarded berths in the Trusted Choice Big "I" Junior Classic in Pinehurst, N.C.

Alex Chiarella shot 74-76—150 to win the boys 13-14 division and Alina Ching shot 78-75—153 to win the girls 13-14 division.

TEAM QUALIFIER SET

Local qualifying for the PGA McGladrey Team Championship is Sunday at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course. Cost is $125, which includes, golf, gifts and lunch. Turtle Bay will also be the site of sectional qualifying. Format is three amateurs with a Turtle Bay pro.
