Kamehameha held Maryknoll to one field goal in the final 4:28 last night and won, 46-40, to advance to tomorrow's Interscholastic League of Honolulu third-place game for a shot at a state tournament berth.

The Warriors, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 9-4 in the regular and postseason and will play Saint Louis at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Kamehameha's Kekuhaupi'o Gym.

The winner of that game will play the Big Island Interscholastic Federation's third-place team at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hilo's Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium for the last of 12 available Division I state tournament berths.

Maryknoll's season ends at 5-9.

The Spartans, who advanced to last night's tournament semifinals with a 69-67 victory over Damien last Friday, played Kamehameha even for much of the game. But their shooting — red hot in the first half — went cold in the second half, especially in the final four-and-a-half minutes.

Maryknoll's only field goal in that span was a 3-pointer by Micah Kalepa at the buzzer.

"Jesse (Nakanishi) coaches defense, and we didn't knock shots down," Spartans coach Steve Hathaway said.

Hot shooting by Ross Lum, Garrick Chock and Scott Kamimura helped Maryknoll take a 25-22 lead at halftime.

But the rims quickly tightened for the Spartans, who managed just four points on two layups in the third period. Auwae DeRego scored on a putback as time expired to give the Warriors a 32-29 lead entering the fourth.

Maryknoll cut it to 38-36 after a jumper by Chock with 4:28 remaining, but Kamehameha went on an 8-1 run over the next three minutes.

DeRego scored all 10 of his points in the second half, including 6 of 6 free-throw shooting.

"Auwae came up with some big rebounds, and he hit all his free throws," Nakanishi said. "I'm glad we finally settled down. (The Spartans) did start missing their 3s against our zone."

Pi'i Minns led the Warriors with 12 points. Lum finished with a game-high 14 points to lead Maryknoll.
