Broken nose and all, Jamie Smith scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds tonight to help 'Iolani hold off Kamehameha, 49-45, at Blaisdell Arena to claim second place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and the ILH's remaining state tournament berth that goes with it.

The Raiders, ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 12-2 in the ILH and will begin state tournament play on Feb. 19. Kamehameha, ranked No. 10, ends its season at 7-7.

Smith, a 6-foot senior center, broke her nose on Jan. 26 against Punahou in the second-to-last game of the regular season. After being taken to Castle Medical Center that night, no break or fracture was found.

But she was later re-examined after suffering from concussion-related headaches, and it was discovered the nose was indeed broken.

Smith sat out the regular season finale — an overtime victory over Mid-Pacific — and returned to practice last Saturday. She scored a game-high 17 points in a postseason tournament win over Sacred Hearts on Tuesday, then had 16 points in the first half last night as 'Iolani took a 30-28 lead into the break.

Smith then gave the Raiders the lead for good at 37-35 on a putback with 3:33 remaining in the third period, and added two free throws to end a 9-0 run that put them up, 44-35, with 1:19 left.
