CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Top-ranked North Carolina waited for Tyler Hansbrough to make history, then cruised to its latest lopsided victory.

Hansbrough scored 20 points last night to break the storied program's career scoring record and help the Tar Heels remain unbeaten with a 91-73 victory over Evansville.

The reigning national player of the year also had nine rebounds for North Carolina (10-0), which shook off a slow start and stretched the lead to double figures shortly after Hansbrough passed Phil Ford for the record midway through the first half. Ford, now an assistant coach to fellow Tar Heel alumnus Larry Brown with the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, finished his career in 1978 with 2,290 points.

"I think everyone who knows me knows how much I love this program and to be a small part of this historic moment for Tyler is a dream come true for me," Ford said. "I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

"It's an honor to be compared in the same breath with Tyler. When I look at how hard he plays and how he listens to Coach Williams, as a player, that's what I tried to do."

Hansbrough, who needed nine points coming in, currently has 2,301 points.

"I never dreamed I'd be here and be the all-time leading scorer," Hansbrough said as he stood alone at midcourt. "This is a great honor to be here and to represent you guys every night in this uniform."

Shy Ely scored 23 points to lead the Purple Aces (7-2).

Playing at home for the first time since Nov. 18 (six games), Josh Heytvelt scored 21 points as the Bulldogs (8-1) crushed the Tigers (0-10) after Spokane, Wash., was hit by a paralyzing snowstorm.

NO. 9 LOUISVILLE 77, MISSISSIPPI 68

Earl Clark had 25 points and 13 rebounds, helping the Cardinals (7-1) beat the Rebels (7-4) at Cincinnati. The loss added more misery for Mississippi coach Andy Kennedy, who was arrested yesterday after a cab driver said the coach punched him while calling him "bin Laden" and other racial insults.

Andy King scored 20 points and the Bulldogs (4-4) made 12 of 17 field goals while hitting 15 of 16 free throws in the second half to defeat the Bulldogs (5-6) at Birmingham, Ala.

Dwight O'Neal scored 18 points, Paul George added 13, and the Bulldogs (5-5) made their 36-30 halftime lead stand up in beating the Bears (3-6) at Fresno, Calif.

HAWAI'I PACIFIC 75, RIO GRANDE (OHIO) 74

Jason Curtis scored 24 points, including two free throws with 1:03 left in overtime for a 75-74 lead, and the Sea Warriors (3-3) defeated the Redstorm (11-2) in the Hoop 'N Surf Classic at Neal Blaisdell Arena for coach Tony Sellitto's 299th victory.

Rio Grande's PJ Rase hit a 3-pointer with one second left in regulation to tie it at 66 and force the extra period. Jeff Ingram added 23 points for HPU.

CHAMINADE 78, WASHBURN (KAN.) 73

Rickey Clayborn had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and four teammates also scored in double figures as the Silverswords (2-5) defeated the Ichabods (7-3) in the Hoop 'N Surf Classic at Kilauea District Park gym.

Tsung-Hsien Chang scored 19 points to lead four teammates in double figures and the Seasiders (4-1) rallied from a 39-34 halftime deficit to beat the Panthers (7-2) at Neal Blaisdell Arena.
