Founder's Day celebration honors legacy of Maiki Aiu

Advertiser Staff

Kumu hula Maiki Aiu, founder of Halau Hula O Maiki, will be remembered and honored in the 24th annual Founder's Day Celebration, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 26 at St. Francis School, 2707 Pamoa Road, in Manoa.

The late master hula teacher, known as the "Mother of the Hawaiian Renaissance," has been an inspiration to scores of students of hula and Hawaiian culture.

Her work is being carried on by her daughter, Coline Kaualoku Aiu, whose students and friends will preform the kumu's favorite songs..

Because it's an outside event, those attending are asked to bring a mat or lawn chair to sit on, an umbrella or hat and even sunscreen for protection from the sunshine.

Tickets: $25 donation, includes a T-shirt; $30 at the door (without a shirt); free for children 10 and younger.

Reservations and information: 955-0050.
