Tennis: Spain defeats Germany to reach Davis Cup semifinals
BREMEN, Germany — Having already advanced to the Davis Cup semifinals, Spain split its reverse singles today and defeated Germany 4-1.
Fernando Verdasco beat Germany's Michael Berrer 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Nicolas Kiefer gave Germany a consolation victory in the concluding match, downing Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 7-6 (2).
Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer staked Spain to a 2-0 lead in Friday's opening singles. Lopez and Verdasco clinched the quarterfinal with a doubles victory Saturday.
Spain, the 2004 Savis Cup champion, plays the defending champion United States in September's semifinals.
