TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE
"Grey's Anatomy" season-opener, 8 p.m., ABC. Last season's finale left lives teetering. We haven't seen this episode, but it's promising. Abandoned by Burke, Cristina went on her "honeymoon" with her friend Meredith. They return to a changed world. Callie is chief resident now, and Derek has convinced Richard not to step down as chief of surgery. Having flunked his exams, George must start over, with the new residents. One of those is Meredith's sister Lexie. She's played by Chyler Leigh, who starred in "That '80s Show," "Girls Club" and "Reunion."
"My Name is Earl" season-opener, 7 p.m., NBC. Last season ended with Earl taking the rap for Joy. Now he finds prison life is tough, especially when there's someone he must make amends to. Joy finds life outside is tougher, when she has to take care of Randy. The result is so-so by "Earl" standards, but fine compared to most TV comedies.
OF NOTE
"Forrest Gump" (1994), 3, 6 p.m., TNT. Here's a chance to catch this long and entertaining Oscar-winner.
"Ugly Betty" season-opener, 7 p.m., ABC. This slot lets you choose between the actresses who have just won Emmys in the comedy categories. Jaime Pressly won the supporting prize in "Earl"; America Ferrera won as the lead in "Betty." Here, Betty tries to forget Henry and return to normal life.
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" season-opener, 8 p.m., CBS. The team races to save Sara, who has been left to die in the desert, under a car.
"The Office" season-opener, 8 p.m., NBC. Michael suspects the office is cursed. His solution is to hold a fun run.
"ER" season-opener, 9 p.m., NBC. The staff frets about how to deal with its stern new leader, played by Stanley Tucci. Then it faces a bigger problem: An explosion at an anti-war rally fills the emergency room and leaves Gates desperate to learn if Neela is OK.
"Without a Trace," 9 p.m., CBS. A 2-year-old from Sudan, recently adopted by a celebrity couple, is missing.
"Big Shots" debut, 9 p.m., ABC. Here are four friends, all of them rich, most of them handsome, none of them easy to like. One has an angry mistress, another has a demanding wife, a third has a dark secret, a fourth has a wife with a dark secret. The stars — Dylan McDermott, Joshua Malina, Michael Vartan, Christopher Titus — have done much better than this one-note show.
