Two teenage girls who apparently drowned Sunday in a Ha'iku irrigation ditch likely got into trouble shortly after they went rafting, according to the Maui medical examiner who performed their autopsies.

"This looks like a straightforward accident," said Dr. Anthony Manoukian, adding that the girls died shortly after 10 a.m. "There is no evidence of significant bodily injury."

The victims, both Kekaulike High School students, were 14-year-old Cherie Hurd of Ha'iku and 13-year-old Lucy Smith of Wailuku. Family members said the two were rafting in an area known as "Tubes" in Lowrie Ditch on Sunday.

Police said yesterday that one of the girls was sucked through a siphon, or pipeline, in the Lowrie Ditch and the other went through three siphons. However, it is unclear whether the girls drowned in a siphon, or whether they died earlier. Police said the victims likely entered Lowrie Ditch at Pe'ahi Road in Ha'iku. They were found "thousands of feet" downstream, and about a mile apart.

Services for Smith were announced yesterday. Visitation is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday at Ballard Family Mortuary, with a service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Valley Isle Memorial Park. Smith is survived by her father, Ron, mother, Renee, brother, Ron, and sister, Clara.

Services for Hurd have not been announced.
