The New England team won the inaugural PGA McGladrey Team Championship yesterday at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort.

It shot 13-under-par 129 for a tournament total of 391.

Hawai'i's team, from Makena Golf Club, was in 10th after the first round and finished 33rd at 432. The pro was Kirk Nelson, with amateurs Mike Morris, Jay Wisthoff and Rick Smith. They won $2,400 in cash and gift certificates. The first grassroots nationwide best-ball championship was sanctioned by The PGA of America and featured 41 PGA Section teams from 32 states.

As part of the 60th anniversary celebration for the U.S. Air Force in Hawai'i, Turtle Bay Resort is hosting an Air Force Appreciation Day Sunday. The day will honor the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and senior Pacific Air Force and Pacific Command staff officers and enlisted personnel. Central to the day will be a golf tournament at the Fazio Course with the Thunderbirds, PACOM and PACAF senior staff, AFCAC (Air Force Community Advisory Committee) and Turtle Bay Resort dignitaries and staff.

The American Indian Pow Wow Association is hosting a four-person "shotgun" tournament Oct. 4, at 8 a.m., at Bay View Golf Park. The tournament, which raises funds for the 33rd annual Intertribal Pow Wow Oct. 6 and 7 at Thomas Square, is looking for interested players and teams. Cost is $50 per person. The pow wow is a free event, open to the public, and will feature Native American dancing, singing, arts and crafts as well as hot fry bread.
