Honolulu's John-David Nako upset top-seeded Bradley Shigezawa Saturday, then took out fourth-seeded David Fink and sixth-seeded Kelii Dias Sunday to win the Boys' 15-18 Division at last weekend's inaugural HSJGA Match Play Championship. Nako beat Dias, 2 and 1, in the final at the Royal Ka'anapali Course on Maui.
"I came into this tournament to have fun. Bradley and I play together all the time so it (Saturday's round) was just like practice," said Nako, who was seeded eighth. "But then (Sunday) I had to get serious — I hadn't played at Ka'anapali until Saturday, so I took what I learned and I adapted."
The friendly rivalry between Honolulu's Anna Jang and Kahului's Kelcie Kawano continued, with Jang pulling through to win the Girls' 15-18 division, 2-up. Jang outlasted Kawano in a playoff at this year's David S. Ishii Foundation Hawai'i State High School Championship. Sunday, Jang took the lead on the 17th hole and clinched it by winning the 18th.
"I tried to concentrate on my own game," Jang said. "Each hole is like a new round and so I approached each hole as a new challenge. ... The key to my match was placement of my tee shot so that I'd have a good angle on my approach."
Justin Keiley (Ha'iku) and Kelli Oride (Lihu'e) won the 13-14 age divisions. Oride and Cassy Isagawa were all square through 17 holes and both landed in greenside bunkers on their approaches to the final hole. Isagawa's bunker shot hit the green, but rolled into a water hazard and Oride won, 1-up.
Jameson Keiley — Justin's brother — captured the 11-12 division along with Alexandra Kaui (Kapolei). Jameson, like Nako, was seeded eighth.
ABE WINS AGAIN
Oahu Country Club's Shane Abe won his third TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship Tuesday at Ko Olina Golf Club. Abe, who also won the title in 1993 and 1995, shot a final round 1-under par 71 for a tournament total of 143.
Defending champion Scott Carroll (72), of Kapalua Plantation, Jay Taise (74), of Mauna Kea Resort, and Alva Wendland (75), of Waikoloa Kings', shared second at 147. Taise parred the first playoff hole to win the final spot in the national event.
Abe and Taise will represent the Aloha Section in the TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship, Oct. 25 to 28, at The PGA Golf Club South Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Abe will receive roundtrip airfare from Delta Air Lines. He also earned $1,500 of the $7,000 purse.
