Special Olympics gets police boost

Safeway Stores and law enforcement officers in Hawai'i will raise money for Special Olympics with the annual "Cop on Top" program, running from 6 a.m. tomorrow through 2 p.m. Saturday.

The program features officers keeping vigil on scaffold towers at Safeway stores on O'ahu, Kaua'i, Maui and the Big Island trying to raise $10,000 at each of 18 locations. The program raised $250,000 last year.



260 SCHOFIELD TROOPS RETURNING

About 260 Schofield Barracks soldiers with the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade are scheduled to return home this afternoon after more than a year in Iraq.

Beginning in late July 2006, the aviation brigade deployed about 2,400 soldiers to Iraq to conduct combat and support missions.

The brigade commanded more than 220 aircraft from Hawai'i and other U.S. bases and supported up to seven infantry, armor and Stryker brigade combat teams under the command of Multi-National Division-North.

The brigade logged more than 153,000 flight hours. More than 7,000 Schofield soldiers are returning from Iraq this month and in October after deploying in July and August of 2006.



BLAISDELL PARKING RESTRICTED 2 DAYS

There will be no public daily or monthly parking available at Blaisdell Center on Friday and next Tuesday, from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City workers will be allowed to park in the lot, but will be routed to the third floor of the parking structure.

Signs will be posted to alert drivers.

JUVENILE ESCAPEE FOUND IN WAIKIKI

Police yesterday arrested an escapee from the Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility after finding the boy in Waikiki.

The boy was in possession of crystal methamphetamine at the time of his arrest at 11:15 a.m., police said.

In addition to escape, the boy was booked as a juvenile for third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug.

State officials declared the boy an escapee Saturday at 7 p.m. when he failed to return to HYCF after being granted a day pass.



KAUA'I HEALTH FAIR ON FRIDAY

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Kaua'i County's anti-drug office is presenting a Health & Wellness Fair Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the breezeway between the Kapule and Pi'ikoi buildings at the Lihu'e Civic Center.

Thirty-four organizations will have informational tables and be available to answer questions at the fair.

SCHOOL PROJECTS GIVEN $595,000

Gov. Linda Lingle has released $595,000 for improvement projects at Farrington High School and at Pohakea Elementary School in 'Ewa Beach.

At Farrington High, $275,000 will be used to design and build a pavilion to supplement the school's existing cafeteria and address a shortage of dining space for students. The new pavilion will be adjacent to the cafeteria.

At Pohakea Elementary, $320,000 will be used for the design and construction of campuswide air conditioning in the school's five permanent and six portable buildings.
