Running back Kama Bailey rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns to lift Damien to a 33-13 win against Pac-Five last night in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II football season opener at Aloha Stadium.
Bailey did most of his damage in the first half on scoring runs of 12, 38 and 13 yards. On his third TD, he broke three tackles in the backfield and another at the 2-yard line. He had 137 yards at the half. He carried only twice in the second half for five yards, but backup Clinton Aina picked up the slack with 77 yards on 14 carries, including a 21-yard TD run to help first-year coach Brian Derby win his league debut.
The defense also pitched in. Defensive back Anthony Tuitele had two interceptions, returning one 45 yards for a TD that made it 26-6 at the half for the Monarchs (2-1-1 overall, 1-0 ILH), The Wolf Pack (1-3, 0-1) also lost two fumbles, both of which were converted into TDs.
Quarterback James Skizewski completed 9 of 29 passes for 162 yards, half of the yards on three completions to J.J. Kaina, who also was key on Bailey's 38-yard TD because of a block he delivered at the 20 that allowed the back to go the rest of the way untouched.
The Monarchs survived despite four interceptions by Skizewski, two by cornerback Ridge Dunlap. Safety Ku Botelho added to the picks list, returning his 43 yards for a TD that pulled Pac-Five to 26-13 with 5:44 left in the third quarter. Damien also registered five sacks, two by lineman Micah Aina.
The Wolf Pack played the game without two experienced offensive linemen and returning running back Jaime Rivera; all were out with injuries. But Max Mower filled in nicely with 98 yards on 11 carries, including a 29-yard TD run.
Pac-Five used three different quarterbacks in the game.
