Low will try out for USA team

Advertiser Staff

Washington State University point guard Derrick Low, a 2004 'Iolani School graduate, is one of 35 college basketball players invited to try out for the USA team that will compete in the Pan American Games in July.

Low, a 6-foot-1 senior and former three-time Advertiser State Player of the Year, was named to the Pac-10's All-Conference team this past season and led the Cougars to a 25-8 record and their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1993. They lost to Vanderbilt, 78-74, in overtime in the second round at Sacramento.

The tryouts are set to begin July 12 in Philadelphia, and 12 players will be selected to represent the USA in the Pan Am Games' basketball tournament later in the month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The USA, coached by Villanova's Jay Wright, will compete against other national teams including Argentina, Canada and Brazil.

The Games are held every four years; past USA team members include Michael Jordan, David Robinson and Grant Hill.
