Gymnasts off to nationals

 •  Triathlon experts help you put it together for race day

Hawai'i level-10 gymnasts Mathew Leong and Joshua Yee qualified for the USA Junior Olympic Nationals, May 10 to 11, in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The duo, both from the Hawaiian Island Twisters Gym, qualified for the nationals based on their performances at the Region 1 Championship, held at the Blaisdell Arena April 11 to 14. Region 1 is recognized as being the most competitive in the nation, with more than 700 boys vying for an opportunity to compete at the nationals.

Meanwhile, Tracie Tamashiro led a Hawai'i group of 19 gymnasts in qualifying for national competitions. Tamashiro, from Hawaiian Island Twisters Gym, placed first with an all-around score of 37.275 in the level 10 senior B division at the USA Junior Olympic Regional Gymnastic Champions April 21 to 23 in Yakima, Wash. Tamashiro had been out of competition for a year due to a shoulder injury and surgery. Tamashiro will compete in the USA Junior Olympic National Championships May 18 to 22 in Mason, Ohio.
