Nellie Mamuad, 18, of Hilo, Hawai'i, was the youth keynote speaker at the National Network for Youth Symposium held in Washington, D.C. The symposium was attended by hundreds of youth-serving professionals, advocates and youths from all over the country.

A Hawai'i Community College student with the goal of majoring in adolescent therapy, Mamuad has overcome a troubled past, having been a participant in residential programs for troubled youth. A former ward of the state, she lived in 15 foster homes. She now volunteers in a foster parent training program where she shares her experiences as a foster child.

First-place winners of the Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center second annual Valentine Card Contest are: Jaida Johnson and Paliku Victorino, both of Ben Parker Elementary, and Richard Sensano-Price of King Intermediate.

Saint Louis School 1944 graduate Albert S.C. Chong and 1951 graduate Dr. Lawrence K.W. Tseu were recently inducted into the school's Gallery of Distinguished Achievers. Also honored was 1950 graduate Raymond Wong Jr.; he received the Brother Edward Gomez '56 Faculty Award.

Mary Borah Navarro was named executive director of Hale 'Opio Kaua'i Inc., replacing recently retired Mary Lou Barela. Navarro has spent the past six years working in youth services on Hawai'i island.

Hale 'Opio Kaua'i is a nonprofit organization that provides residential and in-community services to youths-in-need.
