NIUMALU
Fire risk high despite rain

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters last week continued fighting blazes associated with a months-long dry spell, despite recent rains.

A brushfire Thursday evening burned 40 acres in Niumalu.

That fire started along a road near Garden Isle Disposal and burned toward the Puakea Golf Course.

Five fire stations and two helicopters making water drops responded to the fire. It was largely under control by about 7:15 p.m., but firefighters continued to douse smoldering stumps into the weekend.

No homes were damaged by the blaze.

Firefighters on Kaua'i have fought more than 50 fires in the past six weeks.
