GOING VEGAS
Legendary New Frontier closes

By Anthony Curtis

The New Frontier has closed to make room for a $5 billion, 3,500-room replica of Manhattan's Plaza Hotel. The original Last Frontier Hotel opened in 1942, the second hotel-casino on the fledgling Las Vegas Strip. It had 107 rooms, a rustic lobby, and the Last Frontier Village, a small-town site filled with Western artifacts — Las Vegas' first tourist attraction. The Last Frontier was razed in 1955 and replaced by the first New Frontier; that building was torn down in 1964 and replaced by the Frontier. The name was changed again, back to the New Frontier, in 1998. All indications point to the existing buildings being torn down in September.

WSOP MAIN EVENT: As predicted, the number of entrants for the 2007 World Series of Poker $10,000 buy-in main event decreased this year, dropping from 8,773 to 6,358. The prize pool is a little less than $60 million ($59,784,954, to be exact). The number of players who'll get paid is 621 (just under 10 percent of the field), and the minimum prize is $20,320. There will be five prizes of more than a million dollars and this year's champion will take down a little less than $8.25 million. Last year's champion, Jamie Gold, has already been eliminated. The event which takes place at the Rio All-State Hotel & Casino and is televised on ESPN, wraps up on Tuesday.

Q. Who serves the best hot wings in Vegas?

A. A little bar on the east side of town called Santora's is owned by Buffalo natives and serves great hot wings in temperatures from mild to "suicide." You can order 10 at a time for $7.50, 20 for $13.95, 30 for $17.50, or 50 for $21.50.
