Dell firm purchases Kona resort

By Andrew Gomes
Advertiser Staff Writer

Michael Dell's investment firm and a partner have agreed to buy Kona Village Resort on the Big Island from Ty Warner Hotels and Resorts LLC.

A sale price and other terms were not disclosed, though Dell's MSD Capital L.P. in announcing the deal said Ty Warner would retain an "economic interest" in the property.

Kona Village is a luxury resort that opened in 1965 with 125 thatched-roof bungalows on 82 acres. Warner Hotels bought the property in 2004.

Dell is buying the property with investment management firm Rockpoint Group LLC.

Dell and Rockpoint also own the adjacent 865-acre Hualalai Resort, which they partnered to buy last June.

"Going forward, we and our partner, Rockpoint, intend to maintain the very individual experiences of both Hualalai and Kona Village," Barry A. Sholem, head of MSD Capital's Real Estate Group, said in a statement.
