ISLAND LIFE SHORTS

It's not just Maui residents who are upset about MTV's portrayal of Islanders in its latest reality show, "Maui Fever." Angry viewers everywhere are calling for the show's cancellation. There's even a petition online — petitiononline.com — to get the show off the air. The reason? "Maui Fever" follows seven friends in Ka'anapali, none of whom was born or spent their childhood on Maui. But more than that, these twentysomethings only care about two things: partying and hooking up. Yeah, sure, reality.

BEAN COUNTER

The new Glazer's Artisan Coffee, opened in December, has more than just the average cuppa joe. The man behind the espresso machine is owner Sang "Sam" Han, back from five years of college in Seattle, where he "drank at least three cups of coffee a day and fell in love with it." So much that he ditched his fashion-design aspirations to recreate a Seattle indie coffeehouse, anti-chain vibe with wood floors, chartreuse walls, pendant lamps — and amazing brews. The latte may be the smoothest in town — and it comes with a smiley face drawn in the foam. Glazer's is a hit with college connoisseurs (can't beat the free WiFi), and Sam knows them all. Glazer's Artisan Coffee: 2700 S. King St., 391-6548, www.glazerscoffee.com.

T-SHIRT CHEEK

Honolulu girl Stephanie Rente and her fiance Shane Cabiles play with local profanity on their "holeishet" T-shirt ($15), part of their Made at Home line. The shirt has been a hit at craft fairs. "Everybody says it," says Rente, laughing. The company moniker arose when the couple were considering a move to Las Vegas. "The thought of leaving here ... we came up with a name," explains Rente, who has a day job as a medical assistant. To buy shirts (available as baby doll, long-sleeve, tanks and in kids' sizes) reach Rente at 371-9970 or steph.madeathome@yahoo.com.
