What are you most proud of? "The way our students respond to the expectations that they assumed as Parker School students," said Keawe Liu, Parker School head of institutional advancement. "We expect that they will be successful in a demanding college preparatory curriculum; that they will participate in extracurricular events such as sports, debate and drama; and they will be very active in community service projects."
What is your biggest challenge? "We are very aware of the need to make a Parker School education available to a wide range of the Big Island population," Liu said. "We work hard to provide sufficient financial aid to make this possible."
Special events: fall barbecue in September for the entire school community; George Heneghan Fun Run in September, a 5K run for adults and keiki in honor of a former Parker School coach; 'Ohana Fest in November, every grade in the school brings one dish of a traditional Thanksgiving feast; Winter World Lower School holiday show; Fairways & Friends Golf Tournament; Kahiau Gala Live and Silent Auction, which is used to support scholarships and financial aid packages; Artstart, students spend a day to do art with local artists; and the annual lu'au for the school and Waimea community.
History: The school was established in 1976 and was made possible through a grant from Richard Smart, the last owner of Parker Ranch. Smart envisioned the school to become a place where children could get a first-rate education at an affordable price. A lower school was added in 2005.
