Errol Matsumura of Waipahu heard he had won The Honolulu Advertiser's Pigskin Picks this week from an unusual source — a nurse.

Matsumura, 83, was in a hospital preparing to have surgery for a fractured hip on Monday when a nurse told him she had heard he had won on the Perry and Price radio show on KSSK, according to his wife, Margaret.

Matsumura picked 12 out of 13 games correctly and was chosen the winner from all the ballots with the same record. His only miss was picking favored Dallas over Philadelphia. The Eagles won, 10-6.

"He was surprised," Margaret said. "The nurse told him before I got there."

Matsumura wins a trip for two to Las Vegas and $500.

Margaret said she got a call from her daughter-in-law shortly after the winner was announced after 6 a.m. and had received many congratulatory calls since.

She said she and her husband try to go to Las Vegas every year and went earlier this year.
