Grants to help farmers, culture

The federal government has awarded more than $100,000 in grants to support small farmers on O'ahu and help preserve cultural resources on Moloka'i.

The Oahu Resource Conservation and Development Council will receive $50,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Business Opportunity Grant program.

Ke Aupuni Lokahi Inc. will receive $50,682 from the USDA's Rural Business Enterprise Grant program to help the Moloka'i Land Trust further its mission of protecting and restoring the natural and cultural resources there.


FOOD INDUSTRY BOOSTS RECYCLING

The Hawai'i Food Industry Association announced that it has formed a statewide industry coalition to help reduce litter and the amount of waste being sent to landfills.

The Resource Recovery Committee is co-chaired by Joe Detro, sales and marketing vice president of Foodland Super Market Ltd., and Barry Taniguchi, president and chief executive officer of KTA Super Stores.


HURRICANES SPUR CHAIN-STORE SALES

Hurricane Flossie helped boost sales this month at Cost-U-Less Inc., a discount retailer with stores on the Big Island and Kaua'i.

The Bellevue, Wash., chain said sales at stores open at least 13 months rose 7.2 percent this month compared with a year earlier. It said Flossie, along with Hurricane Dean in the Caribbean, boosted sales in Hawai'i and at two Virgin Island stores as people prepared for the storms.
