The University of Hawai'i William S. Richardson School of Law's Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian Law has announced that 2007 graduates Malina Koani-Guzman, Jocelyn Macadangdang-Doane and Kalikolihau Hannahs are the first recipients of the new Pacific Asian Legal Studies Certificate with a specialty in Native Hawaiian law.
The certificate is the first of its kind and requires completion of courses in international law, human rights and natural resources law, and intensive legal writing on Native Hawaiian law, in addition to the usual course curriculum to earn a juris doctor degree.
The UH 2007 Distinguished Alumni Awards have been presented to Walter Kirimitsu, attorney, state judge and advocate, presently president of Saint Louis High School; Jay Shidler, real-estate entrepreneur and philanthropist, who gave the Shidler College of Business at UH-Manoa a $25 million gift in 2006; and Thomas Gill, attorney, former congressman and lieutenant governor and gubernatorial candidate, who helped shape both Hawai'i and the nation during the 20th century.
Linda Johnsrud, UH vice president for academic planning and policy, has been elected to the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities for a three-year term.
The UH Graduate Division has presented its 2007 Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award to Mari Yoshihara, associate professor and graduate chairwoman of the American Studies Department.
Recipients of the UH 2007 Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Service to the Community are: Linda Cox, community economic development specialist in the Department of National Resources and Environmental Management; Carl Bonham and Byron Gangnes, associate professors in the Department of Economics; Donnalyn Kalei, instructor/coordinator of the Administration of Justice Program at Hawai'i Community College; and Roy Kamida, professor of accounting at Leeward Community College.
Winners of the UH 2007 Kenneth F. Brown Asia Pacific Culture and Architecture Design Award Program are: Anna Heringer and Elke Roswag, from Austria, for their work on "School — Handmade in Bangladesh," and Atsushi Kitagawara Architects for "Gifu Academy of Forest Science and Culture" in Mino City, Gifu prefecture, Japan.
Recipients of the UH 2007 Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching are: Susan Dixon, doctoral candidate in geography at UH-Manoa; Davin Kubota, instructor of language, linguistics and literature at Kapi'olani Community College; Donna Matsumoto, assistant professor of English at Leeward Community College; Jason Turner, assistant professor of marine science at UH-Hilo; Yida Wang, assistant professor of art and art history at UH-Manoa; and Patrick Woo, instructor of Japanese in UH-Manoa's Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures.
UH-Manoa students participating in this summer's Federal Bureau of Investigation Honors Internship Program in Washington, D.C., are Kara Kusunoki and Taryn Meeks.
Kusunoki, who is double majoring in finance and political science, is currently assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division.
Meeks, a third-year law student, is working in the FBI's Office of General Counsel alongside civil and agent attorneys.
These Heald College associates have been recognized:
Shawn Char, of Castle High School, and Kara Panui, of Kapa'a High School, have received the Heald College Excellence in Career Education Teaching Award. Both are Healthcare Academy teachers and advisers of the Health Occupations Students of America clubs at their schools.
The Heald College Outstanding Instructor Award was presented to Manuel "Manny" Domingo recently. He was the first dental-assisting instructor for day classes and was instrumental in helping to launch the program.
Recent inductees into the Heald College Alumni Hall of Fame were: Terri Escritor, a Hilo High School graduate; and Johanna Falenofoa, a Leilehua High School graduate.
Escritor was a 1997 honors graduate from the Heald accounting program.
Falenofoa completed her specialist diploma in the Medical Office Administration Program with highest honors.
The Federal Aviation Administration has been named Employer of the Year. The annual award is presented to a company that has shown exceptional support to Heald College's Career Services Office, students and graduates.
Chaminade University has been accepted into a prestigious national organization, Leadership Alliance, which is made up of 33 institutions of higher learning from across the country. Leadership Alliance seeks to develop underrepresented students into outstanding leaders and role models in the academic, business and public sectors.
Clinical and forensic psychologist Harold Hall has been selected as a Cultural Fellow to the Peace and Conflict Studies Program at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. Twenty-five people from 15 countries were selected. Field trips are scheduled into Cambodia and northern Thailand. The fellowship is a part of the Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program.
