2 firms fined for waste violations

A Hilo painting contractor has been ordered to pay a $32,000 penalty for alleged violations of the state hazardous waste laws, according to state health officials, who also issued an $18,000 penalty against a Kaua'i company for alleged solid waste violations.
The state Health Department issued a Notice of Violation and Order for alleged violations of the state hazardous waste laws against Endo Painting Inc. The state said the company generates hazardous thinners and paints as part of its disposal process. Endo has 20 days to respond to the notice and penalty.
In Kapa'a on Kaua'i, state officials filed a Notice and Finding of Violation and Order against Kulana, Kapa'a 382 LLC and Dan Diamond for solid waste dumping and operation of an open dump. The state said the violations occurred at the Kulana Condominium, and imposed an $18,000 penalty. Kulana, Kapa'a 382 LLC and Dan Diamond requested a hearing to contest the findings.
HTA SUPPORTING CULTURAL PROJECTS
The Hawai'i Tourism Authority has partnered with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement to support Hawaiian cultural projects.
The tourism authority provides funding to various organizations for projects that meet the necessary criteria, and proposals will be accepted until Oct. 12.

STORES CITED FOR CIGARETTE SALES
About one-third of the Big Island stores inspected for sales of cigarettes to minors were cited by the Department of Health in July.
The department said about 25 police citations were issued during the month for sales of tobacco to people under age 18. Four of these were on O'ahu, while the remainder were on the Big Island.
Inspectors checked about 60 Big Island stores, with 21 failing the test. Overall, 105 stores on the Big Island and O'ahu passed the review. Stores receiving the citations face fines from $500 to $2,000.
SEIZED ITEMS GO ON AUCTION BLOCK
A 2002 Cadillac Escalade, 2005 Scion tC, diamond rings, gold Rolex watch, jade rings and pendants will be among the items up for auction today as Rosen Auctions conducts a sale of items seized by the Criminal Justice Division of the state Department of Attorney General.
Viewing of items will begin at 10 a.m. for 21 vehicles and 11 a.m. for other items in the Pikake Room of the Blaisdell Center. The bidding will begin at noon.
