MAKAPU'U
State surveying lighthouse road

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has been out at the Ka Iwi Scenic Wilderness area surveying the hiking roadway up to the Makapu'u Lighthouse in preparation for roadwork next year.

"The road is narrow and not in good shape," said Debra Ward, DLNR spokeswoman. "The project is in the early stages."

No estimates were available on the cost of repairing the roadway, Ward said. The state now owns the 354-acre wilderness area after purchasing it from Kamehameha Schools for $12.8 million.

The Ka Iwi Scenic Shoreline spans from Queen's Beach to Makapu'u Head.
