Prayer vigil for Virginia victims

Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1404 University Ave., is planning a candlelight prayer vigil for Virginia Tech and other campus families at 7 p.m. tomorrow, across the street from the University of Hawai'i's Orvis Auditorium.
There will be music, Bible readings, remarks from the pastor and members of the community, vocal solos and prayers for the healing.

SWAMI TO DISCUSS HINDU ESSENTIALS
Swami Bhaskarananda, senior monk and president of the Vedanta Society of western Washington and the spiritual guide of the Vedanta Society of Hawaii, will discuss "The Essentials of Hinduism: Evolution of Spiritual Thought" at 11:30 a.m. May 6 at the YWCA, 1040 Richards St., room 309

PETER DUMAG TO DIRECT VOCATIONS
The Rev. Peter Dumag has been named full-time director of vocations for the Roman Catholic Church's Diocese of Honolulu, effective July 1.
Dumag is currently administrator of St. Theresa Church in Kihei, Maui.
The Rev. Gary Secor had served as director of vocations as well as vicar for clergy, but the Presbyteral Council decided to devote a priest full-time to the vocations.
AND THOU SHALT NOT WHINE ...
Windward Unity Church has joined the A Complaint Free World movement by giving away 100 purple bracelets last Sunday, reminding congregants not to complain.
The effort, begun by the Rev. Will Bowen of the Christ Church Unity in Missouri, has spread to 11 countries (www.acomplaintfreeworld.org).
The Rev. David McClure of Windward Unity also sermonized on "Thou Shalt Not Whine" at his 9 a.m. Sunday service, which meets at Kailua Seventh-day Adventist Church, 160 Mookua St.
ENJOY BEETHOVEN AT CENTRAL UNION
Central Union's Oratorio Choir and its 26-piece Central Sinfonia Orchestra present Ludwig van Beethoven's Mass in C Major, Opus 86, at 7:30 p.m. April 29.
The free concert honors the 200th anniversary of the composition (written in 1807, the same year as Beethoven's Fifth Symphony) and the 180th anniversary of Beethoven's death.
Central Union's minister of music, Noel Lovelace, conducts, with soloists Catherine Goto, Debbie Kelsey, Kalani Brady and Christopher Kelsey.
