HPU takes two from Hilo in softball

Jessica Adolph pitched a three-hitter and worked out of seventh-inning trouble as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 2-1, yesterday to complete a sweep of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Sea Warrior Field.
Casey Sugihara hit a two-run double in the fifth for the Sea Warriors (28-10, 14-2 PacWest), who took over the conference lead from the Vulcans (33-10, 13-3).
Leo Sing Chow's RBI single with two on and no outs in the top of the seventh helped Hilo close to 2-1. After the next batter popped out, Charity Senas singled to center, but Kanani Numata was thrown out at the plate. Adolph then got Miki Asamura to ground out to end the game.
In the opener, Danielle Young's run-scoring double with one out in the bottom of the 10th won it for the Sea Warriors, 4-3.
Nicole Kalakau hit a two-run double, Tajia Acierto hit a solo homer and Courtney Kessell pitched a six-hitter with eight strikeouts for HPU. Senas hit a solo homer and RBI single for Hilo.
The teams split a non-conference doubleheader Saturday night.
In the first game, Senas hit a pair of two-run homers to power Hilo to a 12-6 victory.
In the second game, Adolph pitched a two-hitter with and Krystal Plunkett hit an RBI single as HPU won, 1-0. Losing pitcher Tracy Ryan pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts.
CHAMINADE LOSES TWO
Amanda Vance had three hits and three RBIs as Dixie State defeated Chaminade, 16-5, yesterday to complete a non-conference doubleheader sweep at the Kailua High field.
Dabney McIntyre added three hits and two RBIs for Dixie (46-12). Brandi Sasaki had two hits and an RBI for the Silverswords (7-36).
In the opener, Vance and Carli Jones each had two hits and two RBIs in Dixie's 9-1 win.
Carolyn Fisher, who pitched 10-plus innings and threw more than 220 pitches on the day, had two hits, including a homer for Chaminade.

AMANAKIS SETS PR
University of Hawai'i's Thalia Amanakis set a personal best in the 400-meter hurdles yesterday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., finishing in 59.86 seconds to become just the third Rainbow Wahine to better the 1-minute mark in the event.
The sophomore from Australia, who posted a personal best of 1:00.49 earlier in the week, also was one of three 'Bows to post NCAA regional standard marks yesterday.
Sophomore Emily Sheppard won the university/open division title in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet 10, and senior Novelle Murray won the invitational section of the discus with a throw of 176-2.
Also, senior Mallory Gilbert tied for third in the university/open division of the high jump with 5-7, Meghan Weaver threw the shot 45-7.75 to place sixth in the invitational section, and Annett Wichmann threw the shot 42-0 to finish sixth in the university/open division.

ISLE DUO FALLS SHORT
Punahou School alums Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger lost in the semifinals of the $200,000 AVP Cuervo Gold Crown Miami Open yesterday.
Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, seeded second, ousted the top-seeded duo of Lambert and Metzger, 21-14, 21-19.
Dalhausser and Rogers beat third-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, 21-14, 21-18, for the championship and the $20,000 winners' prize.
