Niketown 5K run set for Sunday

The seventh annual Niketown 5K Run begins at 8 a.m. Sunday in front of Niketown in Waikiki.

The run raises money for physical education, play and athletic programs at O'ahu schools.

More than 6,000 students and their families participated in last year's event, which raised $90,000. The goal this year is $120,000.

Organizers said entries will be accepted up to the day of the event.

Cost is $20 — $15 goes to the school of the runner's choice, and $5 is for a run T-shirt.

TRIATHLON

HALE'IWA EVENT NOV. 5

Entries are available for the Bikefactory Hale'iwa Triathlon, Nov. 5 at Hale'iwa Beach Park.

The triathlon, which will begin at 6:15 a.m., includes a 400-meter swim, 12-mile bike ride and 3-mile run.

Entries postmarked before Oct. 28 are $70 for individuals and $105 for teams. Late entries are an additional $10.

FREE CLINICS OFFERED

Aloha Youth Lacrosse Association is holding several free clinics for boys and girls aged 7 through high school.

The clinics are:

  • Oct. 15 — Kapi'olani Park, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Oct. 27 — Youth Clinic at Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational, Kapi'olani, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Nov. 19 — Kapi'olani and Kapolei High School, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Dec. 10 — Le Jardin Academy, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Jan. 7 — Kapi'olani, Le Jardin & Kapolei, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

    No experience is required. Equipment will be provided. Players are asked to bring a water bottle, mouth guard and sneakers.

    SOFTBALL

    BENEFIT FOR AUW

    The University of Hawai'i is holding a charity softball tournament tonight from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium to benefit the Aloha United Way.

    Eight teams, representing the six UH system campuses on O'ahu (two from Manoa) and a system office team, comprise the field.

    "This is a great opportunity for the campuses to gather for a fun and competitive event and help make a difference in the community," said Jim Nishimoto, AUW leader for the UH system.

    The tournament is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted throughout the day.

    BASKETBALL

    OFFICIALS SOUGHT

    The Oahu Basketball Referees Association is holding an open house on Oct. 17 for those interested in officiating high school basketball.

    The meeting is at Moanalua High School athletic department, room 201, at 7 p.m.

    Individuals with no experience or those who wish to officiate youth and intermediate leagues also are encouraged to attend.

    The organization officiates O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys and girls basketball games.

    All members attend sessions in rules, mechanics and philosophy, as well as on-court situations.
