Mules beat Trojans; first time since 1996

WAHIAWA Bryant Moniz threw for 229 yards and three touchdowns and Micah Abreu Laybon had 174 all-purpose yards and one TD last night to help Leilehua defeat arch rival Mililani for the first time since 1996, 23-14.
The Mules, ranked No. 8 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference Western Division. Mililani, tied for No. 9 in the poll, fell to 2-2, 0-2.
Before last night, Leilehua's most recent victory over its Central O'ahu rival was a 28-7 win on Oct. 23, 1996, in the first round of the OIA playoffs. The teams tied, 7-7, in their next meeting in 1999 and then the Trojans won every year since.
"I'll always remember my first kiss, my first paycheck, and my first win over Mililani," said Mules head coach Nolan Tokuda, who had never been part of victory over the Trojans since joining the Leilehua staff nine years ago. "We've wanted to break this streak for a long time."
The Mules finally did it behind a balanced offense (229 yards passing, 112 rushing) and a sturdy defense which held Mililani's vaunted rushing attack to 147 yards. Moniz's 20-yard touchdown pass to Martin Iosefo helped give Leilehua the lead for good at 13-7 with 5:43 remaining in the half, and after the Trojans closed to 16-14 on Jordan Torres' 1-yard TD run with 11:04 left in the game, the Mules answered with a 44-yard scoring strike from Moniz to Allan Macam.
The offensive fireworks were a welcome sight for Leilehua fans, who watched the Mules get shut out 20-0 by Saint Louis two weeks ago.
"That hurt us, but we learned from it and since then we've played more as a team," said Abreu Laybon, who caught four passes for 91 yards and rushed for 83 yards on 16 carries last night. "We have good players and we can make things happen. We're playing with more heart now."
After a scoreless first quarter, Abreu Laybon got things started by catching a short dump pass from Moniz, eluding three defenders on the left sideline, then cutting all the way across the field and dashing down the right sideline for a 69-yard touchdown with 9:17 remaining in the half.
An extra point attempt from 30 yards out failed, and Mililani took a 7-6 lead shortly after on Rustin Funakoshi's 12-yard touchdown run. But Leilehua answered with Moniz's scoring pass to Iosefo and never trailed again.
Defensively, the Mules contained Torres, who had more than 400 yards rushing after the first two games of the season. Last night, Torres was held to 90 yards on 21 carries, with 35 coming on one run late in the third quarter.
