Arnoult has hard day at U.S. Open tennis

Maui's Beth Arnoult-Ritthaler, the top-ranked American woman, lost in the first round of the U.S. Open women's wheelchair championship. She was defeated by Maaike Smith of the Netherlands, 6-0, 6-1.
Eight women qualified for the championship at the Billy Jean King National Tennis Center. Arnoult is playing doubles with American Kaitlyn Verfuerth.
Dennis Lajola's U.S. Open junior championship ended when he and Dennis Young, seeded sixth in boys doubles, had to forfeit their opening round match. Lajola lost in three sets in the second round of singles.

HAWAI'I DUO SPLITS
Honolulu's Riley McKibbin and Jacob Jenkins split their pool-play matches yesterday at the 2006 SWATCH-FIVB Under-19 World Championships in Horseshoe Bay, Bermuda.
McKibbin and Jenkins are ranked third among the 24 teams in the main draw. They play Jesus Castizo and Sergio Del Pino of Spain in their final pool play match today.
McKibbin and Jenkins lost their first match to France's Julien Lyneel and Vincent Lacombe, 21-14, 21-15. They rallied to defeat New Zealand's Edwin O'Dea and Michael Watson, 21-13, 21-13.
The top two teams in each of the six boys' pools advance to tomorrow's first two rounds of single-elimination play, along with the four best third-place pairs based on match record, and game and point ratios.
KIDS' CLUB
MEET RAINBOW WAHINE
Members of the University of Hawai'i Kids' Club are invited to join the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team on the court prior to tomorrow's match against No. 8 Stanford at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Kids should proceed down the steps near Gate A, following the signage. UH staff will organize the kids for the pre-game ceremony.
Members will receive a gift following pre-game.
