Boy, 15, confronts men, is shot in leg

A 15-year-old boy was shot in the right leg late Saturday night on Pua Lane at Mayor Wright Homes after confronting a group of young men about loud noise.
Police said yesterday that the men were walking through the housing area at about 11 p.m. During an argument that ensued, one of the men in the group pulled a gun, firing several shots at the youth. The men fled and were still at large last night.
The boy was at The Queen's Medical Center in good condition.
Police have classified the case as an attempted murder.

MAN INJURED AFTER PUNCHING WINDOW
A 19-year-old man, who allegedly was involved in an earlier verbal confrontation with Honolulu police, suffered a critical hand injury when he punched a glass window early yesterday at the UH Hale Noelani dormitory.
UH spokesman Jim Manke said the man is also being investigated for an alleged assault of another student on the third floor of Building C at the dorm before injuring himself. The man was transported at 12:23 a.m. to The Queen's Medical Center.
The injured man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. In addition to the assault complaint, the man is being investigated for criminal property damage for breaking the window.

WOMAN FOUND OFF BEACH IDENTIFIED
The woman who died Saturday after being pulled unconscious from waters off Magic Island was identified yesterday by the Honolulu Medical Examiner's office as Hui Soon Lee, 67, of Waikiki. Lee was pronounced dead at 7:01 p.m. at the scene. An autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death.

PEDESTRIAN KILLED BY TRUCK NAMED
The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office yesterday identified the pedestrian killed Friday when he was run over by a truck on Dillingham Boulevard as Cayetano Duran, 62. Duran died at The Queen's Medical Center.
Police said a GMC pickup driven by a 62-year-old man was reversing from a driveway in the 1800 block of Dillingham Boulevard when it ran over Duran, who was walking on the sidewalk. The accident occurred at about 11:30 a.m.

TIPS SOUGHT ON MISSING BUS RIDER
Police are seeking the public's assistance in finding a mentally challenged 44-year-old man who was last seen Wednesday near his Ala Aolani Place residence in Moanalua Valley. Daniel Espinoza frequently rides the city bus. He is 5 feet 3 and 180 pounds.

86 RECEIVE LOTS IN STATE SUBDIVISION
The state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands has awarded 86 homestead lots at an event on Maui.
The lots are in the Waiehu Kou subdivision and average approximately 8,000 square feet. The turnkey homes will cost between $155,000 and $279,000.
"We have worked together to bring affordable housing to Maui County," said Hawaiian Home Lands Chairman Micah Kane.
In addition to the homes, the state will award 12 lots in early 2007, on which Habitat for Humanity volunteers will build homes.

HONOLULU IN TOP 30% FOR SAFETY
Honolulu ranked 113th out of 371 in a list of the safest and most dangerous U.S. cities overall, as compiled by Morgan Quitno Press, which bases the rankings on FBI figures released in June. The list starts with the safest cities.
Brick, N.J., was rated the safest city and St. Louis the most dangerous. Cities comparable to Honolulu were San Jose, Calif., at 112 and El Paso, Texas, at 114.
Only cities that reported crime rates were included in the list. For example, New Orleans was not included this year because its police department did not report figures.
