St. John's Hardimon earns Big East honor

St. John's senior outside hitter Patti Hardimon was named the Big East Volleyball Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Hardimon, a 2003 Moanalua graduate, recorded her 21st career double-double — and 11th of the season — this past weekend in sweeps over DePaul and Notre Dame.

Against DePaul, Hardimon recorded 12 kills and 12 digs, while tallying two service aces and a .357 hitting percentage. In Sunday's match against Notre Dame, she registered 14 kills and 16 digs, and added two more aces.

Hardimon leads the team with 3.72 kills per game (275). She has tallied 32 service aces and averages 3.43 digs per game (254), good for second on the team.

MORE WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • Washington freshman libero Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani '05) recorded 29 digs in a 30-21, 30-20, 24-30, 30-26, win over Arizona Friday.

    Junior defensive specialist Ashley Aratani ('Iolani '04 of Honolulu) had 11 digs.

    Miyashiro had 10 digs and Aratani 11 in a 30-20, 30-25, 30-24, win over Arizona State Oct. 18.

  • Loyola Marymount junior setter Ashley Dutro (from Honolulu, attended Punahou) had 42 assists and nine digs in a 32-30, 30-28, 30-27 win over Pepperdine Thursday.

    Pepperdine senior libero Kekai Crabbe (Kamehameha '03) had a match-high 18 digs.

  • Cal State East Bay (Hayward, Calif.) junior setter Alyssa Chang (Maryknoll) and Menlo (Atherton, Calif.) senior outside hitter Sanoe Eselu (Moanalua '03 of Waipahu) were named to the All-Tournament Team in the Wild West Tournament from Oct. 13 and 14.

    WOMEN'S GOLF

  • Two Hawai'i golfers duked it out for the Northwest Conference Fall Classic medalist honors this past weekend at Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River, Ore.

    Willamette (Ore.) sophomore Whitney Ueno (Hilo '05) won the tournament after shooting 78-74—152. Ueno trailed Puget Sound (Wash.) senior Emily Lau ('Iolani '03) after the first day.

    Lau shot 76-78—154 to finish in second.

    FOOTBALL

  • Mississippi Valley State freshman Zack Gilarski (King Kekaulike '06) was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Specialist of the Week for the third time this season.

    Gilarski connected on two field goals (28 and 30 yards) and made two extra kicks for a total of eight points. He also had two punts averaging 37.0 yards per punt in a 20-18 win over Texas Southern.

  • Puget Sound senior defensive back Kynan Pang (Punahou '02) recorded 13 tackles, including eight solo, in a 34-26 win over Willamette Oct. 14.

    Senior linebacker Jason Owens (Punahou '02) had four tackles (two solo) and junior linebacker Noa Higgins (Punahou) had three tackles (two solo).

    Also on the team are junior wide receiver Matt Choy ('Iolani), senior defensive lineman Kainoa Yoshida (Kamehameha) and freshman defensive back Frank Speetjens (Kaua'i).

    MEN'S SOCCER

  • Bowling Green sophomore midfielder Justin Kim (Mililani '04) was nominated for Mid-American Conference Player of the Week on Oct. 17, after scoring twice against Pittsburgh Oct. 12.

  • Northland Baptist Bible College (Dunbar, Wis.) sophomore Aaron Levi Debutiaco (Ma'ili Bible '05) helped his team to the Midwest Regional Championship after defeating Moody Bible College, 3-0, Saturday.

    NBBC travels to Kissimmee, Fla., for the National Christian College Athletic Association Div. II Championships Nov. 2 to 4.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • Oregon senior forward Nicole Garbin (Baldwin '01) earned her second Pacific-10 Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week honor after scoring the game-winning goal 3 minutes, 50 seconds into overtime in a 2-1 win over Oregon State Friday.

    Garbin's goal was the 20th game-winner of her career. It was her ninth goal of the season and 31st of her career, tying her for the UO all-time record with Chalise Baysa, who played from 1998-01.

    Garbin leads the Pac-10 in shots (69) and is second in goals with nine this season. Her game-winner against the Beavers was her seventh of the season, most in the conference.

  • Idaho State senior defender Jen Loo (Mililani '03) was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week for games played the week of Oct. 16 to 22.

    Loo anchored the Bengal defense to a pair of wins last week over Montana and Eastern Washington. Loo helped the ISU defense to a 1-0 shutout over Montana Thursday, the first ever win for the Bengals in Missoula. ISU also recorded a 5-1 win over Eastern Washington Sunday.

  • Portland State senior midfielder Kari Otani (Maui '03 of Kahului) scored two goals and had an assist in a 3-1 win over Northern Arizona Friday.

    Otani scored in the 52nd and 80th minutes. Her assist came in the 75th minute.

  • Azusa Pacific (Calif.) senior midfielder Jolie Nitta (Mililani '02) scored a goal and sophomore forward Sarah Yoro (Mililani '05) added an assist in a 4-0 win over The Master's (Calif.) Oct. 17.

    Nitta scored in the 85th minute on a free kick just from the edge of the box into the bottom of the crossbar, which bounced down and into the goal.

    Yoro's assist was in the 24th minute, after she dribbled from deep in the Azusa Pacific midfield up the left sideline before setting up Theresa Broad with a pass.

    MEN'S GOLF

  • Oregon senior Matt Ma ('Iolani '02 of 'Aiea) finished in a tie for fifth place in the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge that concluded yesterday at the par-71, 6,633-yard Pacific Dunes Course in Bandon, Ore.

    Ma shot 73-75-76—224.

    CORRECTION

  • UC Irvine men's soccer coach George Kuntz is also the Director of Coaching for the Hawai'i Youth Soccer Association. That title was omitted in a Homegrown story on Brandon Tario that ran last week.
