Grove Ultimate Fighting winner

Maui's Kendall Grove defeated Chris Price of Indiana in a Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts bout that was televised nationally yesterday.

Grove beat the previously undefeated Price by technical knockout, 3 minutes, 59 seconds, into the first round. Grove worked his way on top of Price, and then unleashed a flurry of punches and elbows.

The bout was televised on Spike TV as part of the UFC Fight Night card at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla.

Grove, a 2000 Baldwin High graduate, improved to 9-3. Price dropped to 8-1. The bout was in the 185-pound division.

Tito Ortiz defeated Ken Shamrock by TKO in the first round in the main event of the card.


SURFING

ANDY IRONS ADVANCES

Kaua'i's Andy Irons advanced to the fourth round of the Billabong Pro Mundaka yesterday.

The third round was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves at Mundaka, Spain.

Irons received a score of 6.43 (out of 10) in the closing seconds of the heat to defeat Brazil's Yuri Sodre in the third round, 11.76-10.6.

"Yeah, that was pretty sketchy," said Irons, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the world. "At the beginning of the heat, I was a little laid back ... it was definitely not one of my better heats."

Irons, his younger brother Bruce Irons, and Pancho Sullivan are the Hawai'i surfers still in the contest. Bruce Irons and Sullivan advanced to the fourth round on Monday.

No. 1-ranked Kelly Slater of Florida also advanced yesterday, as did No. 2 Taj Burrow of Australia.

BEACHLEY NOW NO. 1

Stephanie Gilmore of Australia upset the field to win the Havaianas Beachley Classic women's contest yesterday.

The final day was completed in 2- to 4-foot waves at Manly Beach, Australia.

Gilmore qualified for the contest through a trials heat, and then went undefeated over the three days of the main event.

She beat former world champion Layne Beachley of Australia in yesterday's final, 13.5-11.0.

By placing second yesterday, Beachley moved up to No. 1 in the overall World Championship Tour rankings for women.

Through six of eight events, Beachley has 5,424 points. She is seeking an unprecedented seventh world championship. Australia's Melanie Redman-Carr dropped to No. 2 with 5,112.

Among Hawai'i surfers, Megan Abubo is No. 10, Rochelle Ballard is No. 13, and Keala Kennelly is No. 14.


SOCCER

HILO MEN LOSE, 1-0

Kyle Millerick scored in the eighth minute and Cal State Monterey Bay held on for a 1-0 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in a men's soccer match at Seaside, Calif.

The Otters improved to 1-12-1 while the Vulcans fell to 5-4-1.

HILO WOMEN LOSE, 2-1

Embry-Riddle defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 2-1, yesterday in a women's soccer match at Phoenix, Ariz.

Embry-Riddle improved to 5-9-1.

Karen Weatherby, off an assist from Kelly White, scored for the Vulcans (4-6-1).


VOLLEYBALL

HPU PULLS OFF SWEEP

Barbara Martin had 15 kills and 13 digs as Hawai'i Pacific defeated host Notre Dame de Namur, 30-28, 30-23, 30-22, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at Belmont, Calif.

Lindsay Balfour added 38 assists and 11 digs for the Sea Warriors (5-13 overall, 3-7 PacWest).

Marissa Miller had 10 kills and 14 digs for the Argos (7-18, 0-10).
