Brigham Young-Hawai'i's perfect volleyball season came crashing to an end yesterday at the NCAA Division II Pacific Regional in San Bernardino, Calif.
Tanya White had 20 kills and nine digs as sixth-seeded Cal State Los Angeles rallied to beat the sixth-seeded Seasiders, 23-30, 27-30, 30-23, 30-28, 17-15, in a quarterfinal match.
The Golden Eagles improved to 18-8 while the No. 8-ranked Seasiders finish the season 20-1.
"It was a great match," BYUH coach Wilfred Navalta said. "Cal State deserves a lot of credit for coming back after being two down to win it. Both teams played their hearts out. We'll just have to go back and regroup and come back next year."
Michelle "Tuli" Peters led the Seasiders with 23 kills. Noelle Filimoeatu added 17 kills, and Christina Bobik and Faylynn Merrick each had 12. Setter LeeAnn Mapu contributed 12 digs and 63 assists.
After losing the first two games, Cal State surged to a 20-9 lead in Game 3 before holding off a late surge.
Game 4 was tied at 28 when a White kill and a BYUH attack error squared the match.
The fifth game was tied at 15, but Cal State's Kha Tara Steen hammered a kill then teamed with Alexandra Mueller to block Peters for match point.
"We'll take it, but I wished we had played better," said Cal State coach Bill Lawler.
