Kaua'i's Horner wins local qualifier

Eric Horner of Kekaha, Kaua'i, made a birdie putt on the first playoff hole yesterday at Po'ipu Bay Golf Course in Koloa to win the U.S. Open Championship local qualifier and advance to the sectional qualifier.

Horner and Ron Castillo Jr., of Lihu'e, finished at 2-over-par 74. On the first playoff hole, Castillo missed a birdie putt from 16 feet, while Horner made his from 15 feet.

Castillo is the first alternate. Jonathan Ota of Lihu'e shot a 75 and is the second alternate.

The 36-hole sectional qualifier is June 5 at Po'ipu Bay. The U.S. Open Championship is June 15 to 18 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

ESPN GOLF CHALLENGE LOCAL QUALIFIER MONDAY

The ESPN National Golf Challenge's Territorial Savings Bank local qualifier is scheduled for Monday at the Coral Creek Golf Course.

The event is an amateur two-person, better ball competition with gross and net divisions.

Entry fee is $100. First tee time is at 10:50 a.m.

Hawai'i regional finals are Aug. 27 at Turtle Bay Resort. Net and gross winners win a trip to play in the national finals at Bali Hai and Royal Links Golf Clubs in Las Vegas, Nov. 13 and 14. The event is a benefit for the V-Foundation for cancer research.

DEMO DAY ON KAUA'I

SING CHOW EARNS WEST REGION HONORS

Pitcher/designated player Leo Sing Chow of Hawai'i-Hilo was named to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II West Region second team.

Sing Chow, a junior from Waipahu, led the Vulcans with a .365 batting average. She had 27 RBIs, two home runs, eight doubles and a triple.

She was 7-9 with a 2.67 ERA as a pitcher, including 75 strikeouts and 28 walks in 121 1/3 innings.

HAWAI'I PACIFIC SECTION SCHEDULES WORKSHOPS

The Hawai'i Pacific Section's annual coaches workshop will be June 10 and 11 at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex.

The recreational coaches workshop is June 10. It is led by Kirk Anderson, USTA director of recreational coaches and programs, and the section's Leilani Magee. Highlights include team tennis and high school scenarios, managing large groups and games and drills.

The high-performance workshop is June 10 and 11, with Bobby Bernstein (USTA coaches commissions administrator) and Mike Nishihara (strength and conditioning specialist for USTA coaching education and sport science).

Registration deadline is June 2.
