University of Hawai'i sophomore outfielder Brandi Peiler yesterday was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA West Region second team.
Active members of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association make the selections. By earning the regional honor, Peiler is eligible for the All-America teams, which will be announced during the Women's College World Series next month.
"I was kind of surprised," she said. "I didn't expect anything."
Peiler was not named to the Western Athletic Conference all-star team. The West Region chooses the best from three conferences, including the WAC.
Peiler, who transferred from Hawai'i Pacific last summer, adjusted to Division I softball.
"It was definitely a change," she said. "The caliber of play is different. The coaching is different. The facilities are bigger."
Peiler worked out daily, losing 17 pounds from the start of the season. In 47 games this past season, Peiler hit .336 with nine home runs.
She will spend the summer working in a law office and coaching a softball team.
