Kamehameha proved last night it is more than just an accidental tourist at the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships.
The Warriors raced past Radford, 48-28, to advance to tonight's feature quarterfinal against No. 2 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Honoka'a (12-1). Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at the University of Hawai'i's Stan Sheriff Center.
"They're the real deal," Radford coach David Lane said of the Warriors.
Kamehameha (11-4) earned its state tournament berth by shocking Iolani, 45-40, in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's postseason tournament final last Friday. The Warriors scored 26 points in the fourth period to stun the Raiders, whom many had tabbed as a state title contender.
"Even I couldn't believe we won, it didn't really sink in," said Kamehameha senior guard Tatriana Lorenzo, who finished with 18 points, six rebounds and three steals last night. "The ILH is tough; it's pretty competitive. Anybody could have been here."
Last night, the Warriors showed early on their appearance was no fluke by taking the lead midway through the first period and never letting go. Kamehameha ended the quarter with a 5-0 run to lead 11-5, then used a 7-0 run to go up 21-8 late in the half.
Lorenzo scored eight points in the first period on two baseline jumpers and two layups off steals. In the second quarter, Rhani Kaneaiakala added eight points, six on free throws.
Meanwhile, the Rams (12-4) struggled miserably from the field, making just 3 of 23 attempts.
"Those weren't bad shots, either," Lane said. "There's no excuses — we had good looks, but just couldn't make them."
The struggles continued in the second half, as Radford was 6 of 34 from the field after three periods.
Five players scored in the third quarter for the Warriors, who led 34-19 entering the fourth.
"They're well-coached, and they out-hustled us on the boards," Lane said. "They didn't get a lot more rebounds, but they got the key ones that turned into baskets."
Kaneaiakala finished with 11 points and four rebounds. The Warriors collectively had nine steals and made 15 of 22 free-throw attempts.
"I think our girls know what got us here, but we still need to reinforce it for the next game," Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett said.
Lorenzo said the Warriors have learned their lesson.
"You have to treat every game like it's the championship game," she said. "You've got to bring your best every night."
