Kahuku overcomes Mililani, 50-40

Kahuku conquered injury, Mililani's quirky defense and an optical illusion to defeat Mililani, 50-40, in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball Championships at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Red Raiders (12-5) advance to play top-seeded Punahou (9-2) in a quarterfinal tonight at 6.
Kahuku's Camilla Ah Hoy, playing with shin splints in her right leg, hobbled her way for a game-high 16 points, and point guard Artevia Wily contributed 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals yesterday.
Ah Hoy, a 5-foot-9 senior, said she has endured the pain for the past three games. "I think it was because of the shoes," said Ah Hoy, whose right shin was covered with an ice pack after the game. "I was wearing running shoes (last week), and they weren't giving me any support. It's really, really sore, but I'll be fine. I'm slower with (the injury)."
Wily and Ah Hoy are Kahuku's only returning starters from last season.
"We really rely on Artevia and Milla," Kahuku coach Valerie Anae said. "That's why I gave every girl on the team the green light to shoot. I want the other girls to have that confidence."
Ah Hoy said: "The key was to play as a team. The other girls really stepped up."
Ane Vea pulled down four offensive rebounds, helping the Red Raiders construct a 13-6 advantage in second-chance points.
Kaimi Ah Puck buried two of Kahuku's 3-point shots. Christine Meredith powered her way for two important baskets.
And Wily, despite inconsistent shooting (4 of 15), found ways to solve the Trojans' complex defensive schemes. Mililani opened with a four-defender zone, keeping guard Kelsey Woodward on the other side of the court.
"At first, we thought the girl was going for the bomb," Ah Hoy said. "Then it was like, 'never mind.' It was pretty different."
The Red Raiders eventually settled down, with Wily driving the lane for layups or, after drawing a crowd, passing to an open shooter on the perimeter. On one play, Wily missed a 3-point shot from the left corner but sprinted into the lane to grab the offensive rebound. By the end of the first quarter, Mililani retreated to a basic 2-3 zone.
On defense, the Red Raiders' quickness prevented the Trojans from attacking the lane. The Red Raiders then aggressively defended the passing lanes, making 12 steals. Mililani had 27 turnovers, leading to 19 Kahuku points.
"We needed to be patient on offense," said Mililani coach Scott De Silva, whose team fell to 10-6. "Our game is halfcourt."
Mililani also could not make the most of its limited opportunities. The Trojans missed 13 of their first 18 free throws.
"We were terrible on the free-throw line," De Silva said. "All we had to do was make our free throws."
Part of the problems, both teams insisted, was the background. Because of the UH graduation ceremonies last weekend, the lower-level seats were removed from both end lines. The switch should have come with this warning: the basket is closer than it appears.
"I didn't feel I was shooting it hard, but it kept blasting," said Ah Hoy, whose team faced that basket in the first half. "I had to adjust. You get used to it after awhile."
