Disabled lose transport to an attack by vandals

Advertiser Staff

A handi-van belonging to Lanakila Rehabilitation Center in Wahiawa was found vandalized Monday morning when staff arrived for work.

The windshield and windows were smashed and glass was all over the ground and inside the van, employees reported. The van is used to transport program participants with physical and mental disabilities, the center said.

Program coordinator Wendy Gorka said yesterday that she stared in disbelief when she found the van so badly damaged.

"How could someone be so cruel to do this to our program participants?" Gorka said.

Lanakila Rehabilitation Center, in the Wahiawa Freshwater State Park, offers programs and services to adults with mental, physical, social or age-related challenges and helps them to improve their quality of life. Its core programs include adult daycare services, work force development and Meals on Wheels.

Anyone with information about the vandalism should call Officer Harold Chi at the Wahiawa substation, 621-8442.
