Sci-fi movie to film on Kaua'i

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Famed low-budget film producer Roger Corman, whose 1960 film "The Little Shop of Horrors" became a cult classic, will return to Kaua'i next month to do a movie, 50 years after his last productions on the island.

Corman's Rodeo Productions will film a science fiction flick tentatively titled "Primeval," starring Brad Johnson, Bianca Lawson and Kelly McGillis of "Top Gun." The feature, to be aired on the SciFi Channel, deals with a failed genetic experiment, said Kaua'i County film commissioner Art Umezu.

Umezu said Corman was on Kaua'i in 1956, when he filmed "She Gods of Shark Reef" and "Thunder Over Hawaii." When Corman attended last year's Hawai'i International Film Festival on Kaua'i, Umezu said he recommended the director consider doing another film for the 50th anniversary of those two.

Umezu said production officials are checking locations on the island. They are to film June 1 to 24. They'll be looking for 15 to 20 local folks for speaking parts and about 75 extras. Anyone interested can e-mail production manager Amanda Nugent at amanda.nugent@yahoo.com.

Umezu said he does not know the film's budget, but said it should be a significant boost to the economy.

"If you look at how many people they'll hire to handle different aspects of the movie, from catering to renting kayaks to the actors, not to mention hotel rooms and rent-a-cars, Kaua'i will definitely benefit ... ," he said.
