Baldwin's Lusk has big first day at state track

By Leila Wai
Advertiser Staff Writer

Last year, Baldwin's June Ann Lusk was one of the stars of the state track and field trials as the top qualifier in several events.

But in the 100-meter hurdles, her first event of the 2005 championship finals, she was disqualified and never recovered the rest of the meet.

"At that moment, I was like, 'Oh, no way,' and I cried. It mentally took me out of my races," said Lusk, who was disqualified for touching the starting line.

"I was crying when I was running the 100 (the next race after the 100 hurdles)," she said.

This year she's off to another good start after running in four events in the trials of the Island Movers/HHSAA State Track and Field Championships at Kamehameha Schools last night.

The finals are tonight, also at Kamehameha.

Lusk is the top qualifier in the 100-meter dash (12.74 seconds) and 100-meter hurdles (15.79), and is fourth in the 200 (26.33). Her 4x100 relay team advanced to the finals, and she is expected to run in tonight's 4x400-meter relay for Baldwin.

"I worked hard this year," Lusk said. "And I'm at least two inches behind the starting line. Even starts now, I still have that memory. I still get really afraid when I hear that double shot (that indicates a disqualification)."

Kahuku senior Redmond Tutor also is a top qualifier in multiple events. He is the top seed in the long jump (22 feet, 5 inches), 110-meter hurdles (14.81 seconds), and 300-meter hurdles (40.48). He also is second in the triple jump (45-9 1/2) behind Damien senior Kealoha Pilares (46-1).

"Right now I'm a little tired because I stayed up late doing homework," said Tutor, who went to sleep at 1 a.m. "I was a little dissatisfied (with my performance). The wind made me take one less step and I jumped off the wrong foot (in the long jump), but I still ended up qualifying first."

Kahuku also qualified for the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.

The brisk breeze blew mauka to makai, and Tutor said it also affected his 100-meter hurdles time, but "when you train in the offseason, you gain strength to deal with the wind."

Punahou's Peter Deptula is the top qualifier in the 800- (1:01.34) and 1,500-meter runs (4:19.09).

"I didn't want to take it out too much; just enough to get into the finals," said Deptula, who will try to defend his 800 title today. "I don't feel too much pressure. I'm just taking it as a normal race. I'm looking at the 1,500 first, and then the 800."

His stiffest competition in the 1,500 is Kamehameha senior Jeremy Kamaka'ala, whom he has battled with in track and cross country.

Kamaka'ala has the second fastest 1,500 time (4:23.78), and is the 2005 state champion in the 3,000.

"Jeremy and I have competed a long time, but it's not a hostile competition," Deptula said. "Now we're good friends. If one of us does well, we'll congratulate each other."

Another contender in the 3,000 is Christian Liberty's Keoni Ucker, who lost his shoe on the sixth or seventh lap, but still managed to finish first (9:36.45).

"I double knotted it, I swear," said Ucker, whose shoelaces still came untied. "I grabbed (my shoe) and ripped it off and threw it."

Punahou junior Samantha Cabreros was the top jumper in the long jump (18-0) and triple jump (38-2 1/2).

"I've been resting the past week because I've been sick with the flu," Cabreros said. "I was happy but I wasn't satisfied."
