Prison officials have ended a weeklong prison lockdown that began after a fight in one of the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility recreation yards, according to a prison spokeswoman.

Officials with Corrections Corporation of America conducted a shakedown at the Mississippi prison after the fight among Hawai'i inmates there on April 30, but no information was available yesterday on whether any weapons or other contraband were seized, said Louise Kim McCoy, communications director for Hawai'i's Department of Public Safety.

No one was seriously injured in the fight, which involved about a dozen prisoners. The lockdown ended Monday, McCoy said.

Hawai'i pays about $40 million a year to house about 1,850 men and women convicts in prisons in Mississippi, Oklahoma, Arizona and Kentucky because there is no room for them in state prisons here. The Hawai'i prisoners on the Mainland amount to about half of the state's total prison population.
