Hawai'i golfer Michelle Wie has been named one of Time magazine's "100 most influential people in the world today."
The special issue is scheduled to appear on newsstands beginning today, a Time magazine spokeswoman said.
Wie, a 16-year-old Punahou student, is one of six sports figures to make the list that includes NBA star Steve Nash and NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France.
Time's Jeff Chu wrote, in part: "The (Hawai'i) high schooler, who turned pro only in October, is already No. 2 in the women's world golf rankings. She tops the pay scale, pocketing about $10 million a year in endorsements from Nike and Sony. Her sponsors are betting on a player who has never won a pro tourney. 'They believe in my dreams,' she says."
Wie is playing in the Asian Tour's SK Telecom Open in Seoul, South Korea, starting Thursday, her eighth attempt to make the cut in a men's tournament.
